BLIND EIGHT

A Collaborative Performance of Subconscious Convergence by Celula de Artă (The Art Cell)

Originally conceived by Daniel Loagăr and developed through the Celula de Artă collective, the „Blind” series reaches its most ambitious iteration with Blind Eight. This avant-garde, philosophical experiment, is rooted in the Dadaist tradition. It is designed to negate the visual and embrace the subconscious layering of artistic languages — a performance where artists create "with eyes wide shut," each continuing the work of the predecessor without seeing the previous interventions.

For another landmark edition, held once more on World Sight Day, the project expanded its profound social mission, bridging the gap between the visual arts and the visually impaired community in collaboration with the Romanian Association of the Blind, as well as the Entuziart Association.

My Role & Contributions

Concept & Grant Strategy

I played a pivotal role in the professional architecturalization of this project, authoring the narrative framework for the grant. My focus was to elevate the „Blind” structure to a higher level of social and cultural impact, infusing it with new elements that expand and enrich the original concept - such as the tactile exhibition brought by Entuziart - ensuring a complex interdisciplinary approach that resonated with institutional standards. (The project was co-financed by the Bucharest Sector 2 City Hall through the 2025 Co-financing Program.)

Curatorial Leadership

I served as the Main Curator of the exhibition, working in close collaboration with Adriana Borună. Together, we curated a selection of tactile artworks specifically designed for accessibility. My curatorial objective was to move beyond the visual, ensuring the works possessed a profound relevance and sensory depth for blind and partially sighted visitors.

Narrative & Auditory Guidance

I acted as the voice and narrator for the auditory layers accompanying each artwork. By providing specialized audio descriptions, I translated the abstract visual language into a tangible mental experience, allowing the audience to navigate the exhibition through a guided, immersive sensory journey.

Moderation & Public Dialogue

During the event, I moderated the Q&A Workshop and Panel Discussion. Alongside Adriana Borună and members of the blind community, I facilitated a deep, open dialogue between artists and the public. We explored the metaphysical ways in which the visually impaired relate to art and the everyday world, fostering a new perspective on social and artistic integration.

Project Evolution

  • Blind Four (2018): Initiated at Celula de Artă by Daniel Loagăr.

  • Blind Five (2022): Expanded with five artists from the Celula de Artă collective.

  • Blind Six (2023): Integrated live musical performance at Lunea la Pod.

  • Blind Seven (2024): The definitive social and interdisciplinary turning point, featuring a full sensory experience, tactile exhibitions, and educational workshops.

  • Blind Eight (2025): Representing the project's conceptual zenith, this iteration refined the synergy between live creation and sensory accessibility, serving as a masterclass in inclusive curation. Alongside immersive audio-descriptions and specialized workshops, a central highlight was the "Little Prince" tactile exhibition by Entuziart — a scenic ceramic path created by visually impaired children for their peers. By translating the iconic narrative into a sequence of artistic touch-points, this collaboration further dismantled the boundaries of traditional art viewership, transforming the experience into a profound, shared sensory journey.

Project Architecture & Key Activities

The multifaceted nature of Blind Eight was brought to life through a series of interdisciplinary activities, where I served as a bridge between the creative act and the public experience.

The Live Performance: Narrated Subconscious Creation

The core of the event featured eight artists painting in total blindness, each continuing the work of the previous one in a blind-relay format. Beyond the artistic collaboration, I provided the live auditory support; as the action unfolded on canvas, I narrated the process in real-time for the visually impaired audience, translating the movements, textures, and emerging shapes into a coherent mental image.

The Tactile Exhibitions: A Dual Sensory Journey

The event featured two parallel tactile exhibitions designed to be explored through touch and specialized audio guides. The first, curated by me alongside Adriana Borună, showcased tactile works created by the artists participating in the Blind performance. I supervised their process of creation, to ensure the tactile relevance and narrative flow, while also serving as the official voice of the audio descriptions, allowing visitors to "see" the works through a curated auditory experience. Running in tandem, the "Little Prince" tactile path — a collaboration with Entuziart Association and curated by Oana Dorneanu — featured ceramic works created by visually impaired children for their peers, translating the iconic story into a sequence of artistic touch-points.

The "In-Sight" Q&A Workshop: Bridging Perspectives

A cornerstone of the project was the open dialogue between the artistic community and the visually impaired. I served as the Moderator of this panel discussion, facilitating a deep exchange of ideas between Adriana Borună, guest speakers from the blind community, the artists, and the public. Together, we explored how the lack of sight redefines the perception of art and the everyday world.

Experiential Workshop: Painting Without Sight

The public was invited to step out of their visual comfort zone through a guided educational session on the history of performance art. I contributed to the framework of this workshop, encouraging participants to experiment with painting while deprived of sight, thus internalizing the philosophical essence of the "Blind" concept.
